Climate Action & Resilience

Home / Climate Action & Resilience

Communities across the Horn of Africa face increasing threats from climate change and environmental shocks that disrupt livelihoods, health, and stability.
At Young Africans for Peace and Development (YAPAD), we are committed to helping these communities adapt, recover, and thrive in the face of growing climate challenges.

Understanding the Challenge

or decades, pastoral and cross-border communities have endured droughts, floods, disease outbreaks, and resource-based conflicts.
While these communities have developed coping mechanisms over generations, many of these strategies are no longer effective due to the frequency and severity of modern climate-induced shocks.

As a result, households face reduced access to water and pasture, loss of livestock, and declining livelihoods, increasing vulnerability and food insecurity.

Our Approach

To build sustainable and climate-resilient communities, YAPAD is implementing a Community Managed Disaster Risk Reduction (CMDRR) framework that empowers local people to understand risks, prepare for them, and take proactive action.

Through the CMDRR approach, we:

  • Establish early warning systems (EWS) to monitor weather changes, livestock and human diseases, and emerging conflicts in cross-border areas

  • Promote community-based adaptation and natural resource management practices

  • Support climate-smart livelihoods that enhance food security and economic resilience

  • Integrate environmental conservation into peacebuilding and development programs

Building a Sustainable Future

By integrating climate action into all our programs, YAPAD aims to strengthen community resilience, reduce disaster risks, and promote sustainable resource use.
We work closely with local authorities, community structures, and development partners to ensure that every initiative contributes to a greener, safer, and more sustainable future.

Our Vision

YAPAD envisions climate-resilient communities that are equipped with the knowledge, systems, and capacity to anticipate and withstand environmental shock, ensuring stability, sustainability, and dignity for generations to come.
